Young artists excel

Artistic pupils from Brecon schools have scooped top prizes in this year’s Royal Welsh Agricultural Society’s annual Children’s Art and Design Competition sponsored by Western Power Distribution (WPD).

Each year the competition attracts hundreds of entries from young artists across Wales. Pupils are invited to use their skill and imagination to design a painting or drawing illustrating ‘What Christmas Means to Me’.

Emily Bevan, aged 11of Mount Street Junior School, was declared the overall winner of the competition, she also won first prize in the nine to eleven-year-old category. She received a cash prize of £30, and her school received a cash prize of £200.

Emily’s design will also be used as the Society’s official Christmas card for 2016 and will be on sale at the Society’s Winter Fair in December.

Other winners from Mount Street Junior School in this category included Aaliyah James, aged 9 received a second prize of £20 and Hellen Liang, aged 10 received third prize of £15. Caleb Vater of Christ College Brecon and James Houlsby of Ysgol Dolafan, Llanwrtyd Wells received highly commended in the same category.

Mount Street Juniors also won the following prizes in the five to eight-year-old category Josh Davies, aged 8 received a cash prize of £30, while Isla Burgess, aged 8 received a second prize of £20 and Imogen Mackenzie, also aged 8 was awarded a third prize of £15. Reuben Price from Builth Wells Primary School was awarded a highly commended in the same category.

Huw Thomas, WPD’s Distribution Manager for East Wales, who presented the youngsters with their prizes, praised the excellent standard of entries: “We’ve been sponsoring this competition now for over 16 years and each year the children manage to delight us with their creative ideas.”

During the Show, prize-winning posters were displayed at Western Power Distribution’s award-winning display stand.
